But in Buffalo many top paid bureaucrats do not live where they say they do. Everybody in power knows it, but denies it. Indeed other staff is hired to enforce residency requirements spelled out in detail in a new City Charter. And taxpayers pay them to wink at the high level lies. It is a costly charade that goes back years, as Buffalo continues to steadily lose its middle class & its tax base.

Sadly, Our Leaders are Liars, but at least they are Equal Opportunity LIARS.

Incredibly, the chair of the subcommittee forming residency rules for the Charter Commission was a non-resident, who lied about residency when exposed. Pitts-appointee to the Charter Commission Bishop Nathan Halton has long lived on Sunrise Highway in Amherst. But when exposed, he insisted he lived in his investment “winter home” gotten cheaply in HUD foreclosure on struggling Bennett Village Terrace. Indeed the first 3 of 11 prosecutions of this writer by DA Clark were in retaliation for exposing non-residency of Masiello cronies, then-Treasurer Marilyn & the powerful Rev. Bennett W Smith, who have long lived on Red Oak Drive in Williamsville. (The Buffalo News did not mention in Monday’s piece on my Federal charges against DA Clark that my 35 day jail sentence for “failure to evict” a tenant on struggling Sweet Avenue, to prepare for the 26th demolition on one block, occurred 2 hours after my threat of a “citizen’s arrest” of the Treasurer if the Mayor did not enforce residency requirements upon her. Ironically, she was fired a week later for boxes of uncashed tax checks under her desk).

PISTOL_PACKIN’ PREACHERS . . . Also another story for another time, there is an interesting dynamic of many inner-city clergy living in suburbs, even packing pistols to protect their upscale vehicles on mean city streets, as many tithing church members have no vehicles at all. (The old Christian image of ‘shepherd’ & ‘sheep’ takes on a whole new meaning).

(Un) HOLY Trinity?

The Residency charade works so well because Nanula, Pitts & Masiello each have high level non-resident cronies. In a city with way too much government, a basic necessity of democracy, “checks & balances” is absent in triple layered government . . . replaced by “NO WHISTLEBLOWING ALLOWED”.

It is no coincidence that my prosecution #11 by DA Clark is on behalf of Residency Officer #3, now Independence Party Chair, Charlie Flynn. Flynn, convicted of “criminal tampering” at Kader Realty in 1995, is a Commissioner of BMHA paid $25 to $50 an hour stipend to be a “keeper of the poor”. Flynn is very unhappy at exposure of this first HUD-FHA scam house sale, which was virtually identical to the Parlato multi-million FHA scam. (Frank Parlato Jr is Tonawanda Chair of the Independence Party) Masiello’s top non-resident crony is BMHA Assistant Executive Tom Williams, who earns $73,000 with a GED & takes his check from housing Buffalo’s poorest to Thompson Road in Clarence. But you can call him at his listed phone (1258 West, 881-1949) with his mother-in-law (no confirmation that he sleeps with her) on struggling West Ave., doors from a recent HUD foreclosed re-sale at $2500 & a block from the Mayor’s boyhood home.
BMHA Exec. Sharon West is a recent addition to the City Independence Party Committee. She sent her two BMHA lawyers (Gillian Brown & Rev. James Lagona) to my recent arraignment #11 to add her weight to the transaction. No matter that their (taxpayer-funded) presence raises serious ethical issues.

Corrupt Comptroller?

The over-all weakness of Charter Revision is reduced by powerful new authority of the City Comptroller to do performance audits of city government. Tragically, the first comptroller after Charter revision has been a crushing disappointment. Nanula is both incompetent & corrupt, while breaking a promise not to run for higher office. But his close personal relationship to Democratic Boss Pigeon (also another story) & his personal riches have insulated him from accountability. His analysis of last fiscal year is still undone, his most fundamental responsibility, as his budget keeps increasing. And questions about his putting 60,000 miles (campaigning?) on a city leased vehicle, remain unanswered.

Nanula’s “media icon” Tony Farina lives in Niagara County. But he claims to live in a free room on Lafayette Ave. near Ashland. Farina even threatened a “Horton Donut Lawsuit” when we reported him sighted mornings in Kenmore (on his way to work from conjugal visits?). Lying about residency is apparently not an ethics issue in a ‘worst governed city’. At least not if you are “connected”, making one above the law. But lying may be a Nanula trademark. He made a $100,000 personal loan to his friend Mark Maussner before the demise of Buffalo Beat. It was followed by the elevation of Farina to senior writer at Beat. But Nanula denies making the loan. We know better.

Nanula did “find the Lord” at Calvary Baptist Church during his last campaign; he was reportedly carried out of church “throbbing with the Spirit” . . .which may forgive sins such as lying. Being less religious ourselves, we believe in old-fashioned ethics such as honesty & accountability.

Pitts & Stitts . . . finishing the unholy trinity, Pitts crony Larry Stitts runs Johnny B Wiley Athletic Field (Jefferson & Best) from Pitts offices a mile away. Stitts claims to live in an attic apartment on Scheule near Delavan. . not with his wife on Tonawanda Creek Rd in E. Amherst (near Transit)
